Text of the reading presented by Jane Maddox

I am stepping in for Carrie’s godfather and my brother, Jack, today because he was unable to make it. He is tending to his own long-term marriage commitments due to a family emergency concerning his mother-in-law.

We have watched Carrie grow from a precocious, brilliant little girl, reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder books at age four to a mature, well-educated, yet modest adult. (with a fine choice in career, I might add)

We don't know Darren well, but three things suggest he must be an exceptional man. Anyone who becomes a large animal veterinarian has to be a good person (of course, I’m not biased). A family that holds the rehearsal dinner on a farm fits our family's idea of an excellent setting for a formal event. And if Carrie wants to spend her life with you, then we are convinced you are good man.

So, Carrie and Darren, as you exchange vows, give thought to what is really important for your future.

Family - You have a huge extended family as can be seen here from attendance at the wedding. Carrie has her mother, two dads, three siblings, extra grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. (Her Grandmother Maddox would have loved to be here to watch the first wedding of a granddaughter. She and I had even talked about what we were going to wear. – I didn’t manage to say this; I was too choked up.) And Darren has a large extended family you are now merging with that. Take advantage of their help, love, and friendship and return it. But, also make sure that your love and friendship for each other is the center of your attention.

Patience and Forgiveness- As wonderful as both of you are, you will discover faults and make mistakes along the way. There is no harm in occasional disagreements, but don't dwell on the problems. Forgive, forget, and focus on the reasons you chose each other. Learn and grow together, not apart.

Take Care of Yourselves - Do what you want to do with your lives. There will be many obligations and demands for your time, but don't let others expectations pull you away from the reasons you are getting married. Always make time to fulfill your own and each other's dreams and desires.

Carrie and Darren, you are making a big commitment to each other today. Everyone here wishes you well in your marriage. Please, let us know if you ever need our help and we will be there for you. We all love you very much.
